What a Change of Seasons Brings to our Forest

With September comes late summer warmth, following several months of marine layer and moisture providing fog. What changes will we see as we stroll the Fiscalini Ranch Preserve Forest Trails?

Are our native annuals shutting down for the season? Are the grasses drier, the understory plants less showy, our Monterey pines and coastal oaks looking thirsty? Do these changes in our forest add to the threat of fire? Just what creates a “Fire Ladder” and can we prevent them?  Are we matching forest conditions that only added “Fuel to the Fire” to the recent blazes in Big Sur?  Or is there a plan to protect our beautiful Fiscalini Ranch Preserve forest and our charming village of Cambria? You be the judge as you take each twist and turn of our forest trails and discover new sights and sounds. From the chattering of protective gray squirrels, to the hidden homes of ensatinas, to the mysteries of lichens and oak galls there is always much to notice and question as we stroll. Learn how our forest protects itself -but still needs a bit of help…yours and mine!

Dress in layers and protect yourself from poison oak. Children are welcome with adult supervision - no dogs please. Be aware that there are no restroom facilities on the Ranch and plan accordingly. Rain cancels.
